Ossies wants to send out a big THANK YOU to all the men & women of our armed forces who keep us safe so we can enjoy the little slice of heaven we call home.

12/12/09:
Nye Beach Ocean: 160
Nye Beach Pipe Outfall: 650
Agate Beach Wayside: 41
Agate Beach Headland: 10
Big Creek Outfall: 10

*anything above 158 would trigger a health advisory from the state of Oregon for water contact

For your reference, the numbers represent something called CFU per 100 ml. CFU stands for “Colony Forming Units”. It’s probably just best described as “organisms per 100ml”. The reason we call them CFUs, is because bacteria generally populate in visible colonies by which one can make a measurement. The specific bacteria that we are looking at is called Enterococcus and is a similar indicator for water quality as E. coli, but preferred for ocean waters over E. coli. Members of two bacteria groups, the coliforms (E.coli, used for freshwater) and fecal streptococci (Enterococcus, used for saltwater), are used as indicators of possible sewage contamination because they are commonly found in human and animal feces.

Although they are generally not harmful themselves, they indicate the possible presence of pathogenic (disease-causing) bacteria, viruses, and protozoans that also live in human and animal digestive systems. Their presence in streams suggests that pathogenic microorganisms might also be present and that swimming and eating shellfish might pose a health risk. Since it is difficult, time-consuming, and expensive to test directly for the presence of a large variety of pathogens, water is usually tested for coliforms and fecal streptococci instead.

A first for Oregon surfers happens twice in the same session! Both Dan Hasselschwert & Ollie Richardson have been entered for the Monster Tube of the Year award in the 10th Annual Global Big Wave Awards. Dan got a super deep tube at Scotts Reef that got entered for the award which pays $5,000.00 to the photo that is selected as the winner. Ollie was alsoentered for a big barrel he probablt wishes he would have made but instead took a huge wipeout….another catagory in the Billabong XXL Contest is “Wipeout of the Year” which Ollie’s photo is also a candidate for.

As a result of years of hard surfing, training and dedication this Oregon Tow team now has the 3 opportunities to win the $5,000.00 prize. This is the first time an Oregon surfer has been entered for the prestigious big wave award. Dan & Ollie…..way to go BIG!!!!
